Center approved setting up of 26 medical colleges
Replying to the questions asked by S Gnanathiraviam, Basanta Kumar Panda and Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey shared an information saying that center has approved setting up of 26 new medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS)-- 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals'.Under the third phase of the CSS, the government has given nod for establishing medical colleges in six states and union territories namely Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.The minister further said that Tamil Nadu was not covered in the first and second phase but in the third phase six medical colleges have been approved for Tamil Nadu.Another question asked by Tokheo Yepthomi was on the status of Nagaland Medical College to which Ashwini Kumar Choubey replied that the college was approved in the first phase of the CSS at the cost of 189 crores. The funds will be shared by the center and the state government in the ration 90:10."Complete amount of Central share amounting to Rs.171.10 crore has been released to the State Government of Nagaland for the establishment of this medical college. The State has reported the progress of 16.50% on the Ministry's dashboard. The State Government has been requested to expedite the completion of this medical college," he replied.
