NEET 2019 | HRD ministry may have to roll back the decision

NEET 2019 | HRD ministry may have to roll back the decision

It has been almost a month since Prakash Javadekar announced that National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will be conducted by the government online twice a year from 2019. But, now it seems that the government is likely to roll back on its decision regarding the NEET exam. The NEET exam is conducted by the government to determine the eligibility of the students for admission to various medical institutes of the nation. As far as 2019 NEET is concerned, the exam will continue as a traditional pen and paper test and in all possibility, the exam will be conducted by the CBSE and not by the National Testing Agency. The decision of the government is influenced by the Health Ministry which fears that conducting an online test will put students from the rural and economically backwards section at a severe disadvantage. In a press conference on July 6, Javadekar had announced that NTA will now be in charge of conducting the exams like NET, NEET, JEE (Mains) and NEET will be conducted twice in the months of February and May. After the announcement, Health Ministry sends a letter to the HRD Ministry stating that the announcement was made regarding the NEET exam without consulting them on the matter and apart from fact that online test put rural candidates at a disadvantage Health ministry also did not approve of the calendar announced by the Javadekar. “It is proposed that the NTA would conduct exam in February and May. Typically, Class 12 students also appear in the Board exams during the February-March period. This would suggest a continuous period of 4-5 months of exams for the students and may add to the pressure on students,” the Health Ministryʼs letter states. “The NTA would have to maintain a large question bank to cater to the proposed pattern of exam. With 16 sessions in a year, the bank is likely to be depleted of novelty very early. A potential misuse could be coaching centers fielding dummy candidates in every session to note the questions asked in the exam,” the letter also states.
