HRD ministry urges universities to have a traditional dress code for the convocations

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Prakash Javadekar urged all the universities of the nation to do away with the British attire and have the traditional dress code for the convocation ceremony. Asserting the Gandhi advocated the use of Khadi he suggested the universities to ask the students and come up with the traditional design options for the convocation attire. “I would like to urge all universities across the country that rather than going for British-inspired clothes for their convocation they should go for traditional Indian clothes. Universities can ask their students to come up with design options or can also refer to some designs posted on HRD Ministryʼs website,” Javadekar said in a video message to universities. “Gandhi also advocated use the of Khadi. Due to various initiatives, Khadi sale has gone up by four times hence paving way for the creation of more jobs. This will be an apt tribute to him on his 150th birth anniversary,” he added. In July 2015, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had also asked the universities to consider the traditional ceremonial dresses for occasions like convocations. Many higher education institutions including IITs of Kanpur and Bombay replaced the British attire with the traditional attire for the convocation ceremony. In July 2013, IIT-BHU students wore white dhoti-kurta or pajama-kurta and women students wore white sari or salwar-kurta.
