After DUTA strike, UGC may amend the teacher appointment regulations
On Thursday, after meeting with the office-bearers of Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA), the HRD Ministry said that the regulations governing the appointment of teachers and other academic staff in the universities may be amended. The meeting was held after the members of the DUTA went on strike over the issue of absorption of ad-hoc teachers.On Wednesday, a large number of teachers barricaded the VC office. On Thursday morning, as a large number of teachers tried to enter the VC office they met with barricades and heavy police presence which tried to stop them. Later, the teachers said that the police had assaulted them.Teachers stood outside the office and continue their protest and raised slogans against the VC.To contain the matter, HRD Ministry held a meeting with the university's vice-chancellor, University Grants Commission's (UGC) chairman, secretary and other officials on Thursday. Later, the ministry and UGC officials also held a meeting with the DUTA officials. As of now, talks among the ministry, UGC officials and DUTA officials are inconclusive.In a statement, the ministry said “UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and measures for the maintenance of standards in higher education 2018, may be amended. It is expected that with the changes, all the ad-hoc/ temporary/ contract teachers with requisite eligibility, and have taught/ have been teaching in the current academic session in the university/ Institution/college would be short-listed for the interview for permanent positions”.
