Health Ministry may slash the course fee for the medical courses

Big relief for the medical students may be on its way as a special panel is mulling over the idea of slashing the fee for the graduate and post-graduate seats by the 70 percent and 90 percent respectively. The special panel (Board of Governors (BoG)) is tasked with drafting guidelines for the fee structure in private medical colleges.According to the sources, after the reduction in the fee students will be able to pursue medical education in private colleges between INR 6 lakh - 10 lakh.Currently, in a number of states students are charged annually a fee of INR 25 lakh for the UG courses and for PG courses the fee varies from INR 1 crore to 3 crores. Before creating the draft guidelines for regulating the fee, BoG consulted with the states ad sought their suggestions regarding the same. The NMC bill received the assent of the president on August 8 and the same was notified on the same day. The NMC Act will replace the Medical Council of India and will regulate all aspects of the medical education, profession and institutions. As of now, the ministry has asked private medical and dental colleges to charge only the first year’s fee from the students at the time of admission.
