JBT-TGT paper leak: Fate of 800 teachers in Punjab hangs in balance
The fate of 800 teachers hangs in balance as the union territory education department is all set to release the final call on teachers who were recruited through JBT-TGT exam in 2015. The exam was held for the 1150 posts for Junior Basic Teacher (JBT), Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) and Nursery Training Teacher. Teachers are however afraid that by the end of this month they can lose their job and are also going to stage a protest on May 15 regarding the same. “We are still looking into the legalities of the issue and will decide accordingly. The termination of service is not yet confirmed and I cannot say anything as to what will happen before a decision is taken by the panel,” said B L Sharma, Education Secretary. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) in August 2016, found that at least 300 aspirants benefited from paper leak and were recruited as a government teachers in various government schools of Chandigarh. After investigation, SIT recommended that the services of all the teachers recruited through 2015 exam should be terminated. The teachers repeatedly approached the government that government should leave the teachers who were not involved in the scam and punish only the offenders. The education secretary said “The greater picture has to be kept within sight as it’s difficult to determine how many have been benefited from this scam.” A JBT, who did not want to be named, said, “Whatʼs the guarantee that recruitment will be transparent once again? This is an administrative failure.” A TGT, requesting anonymity, said, “So many of us left lucrative jobs to be enrolled as teachers. I was an assistant professor in a college, before I appeared for the exam in 2015. Innocent and brilliant teachers, who have nothing to do with the scam, should not suffer such a fate. Who will be responsible for our families?”
