BITS Pilani gets its ‘Eminence’ status after two months

Earlier, HRD Ministry had decided that BITS Pilani will get the LoI only when UGC will regularize its Hyderabad and Goa campuses. However; the announcement regarding BITS Pilani ‘Eminence’ was made by the government. This week, the government has issued formal orders notifying the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status to the BITS Pilani. Earlier, this year, HRD Ministry had issued Letters of Intent (LoI) to five out of six IoEs. BITS was selected under the private institution category but was left out because of the standoff with the UGC regarding the legality of its campuses in Hyderabad and Goa. The Ministry had said that the institute will get the LoI only after its campuses in Hyderabad and Goa are regularized by the UGC. The engineering school then applied afresh and both of its campuses were approved by the UGC. The confrontation between the UGC and BITS dates back to November 9, 2015 when the regulator had issued notices to the 10 deemed universities and directed them to shut down their off-campuses as they were set up without UGC’s permission. BITS Pilani went to Delhi High Court, which directed the UGC not to take any coercive action as the institute had argued that both of its campuses in Goa and Hyderabad were established in 2004 and 2008 respectively and does not fall under the Deemed University regulations.
