Schools cannot refuse the admissions for the lack of Aadhaar Card

In a recent statement, the UIDAI has asserted that schools cannot refuse the admissions to the children for not having an Aadhaar card. Any denial made by the schools on this ground is illegal. The authority also said that schools must coordinate with the local banks, post offices, state education department and district administration to provide aadhaar enrollment services on their campus. In an official circular addressed to the Chief Secretaries of States UIDAI said “it is aware of instances where some schools are refusing admission in absence of Aadhaar. It must be ensured that no children are deprived/denied of their due benefits or rights for want of Aadhaar.” Warning that such denials are "invalid and not permitted under the law", the UIDAI said "no child should be denied admission and other facilities for lack of Aadhaar". The move by the UIDAI has come as a major relief to the parents and students who are facing difficulties in getting admissions because schools are insisting on Aadhaar number during admission. "Till Aadhaar number is assigned or biometrics are updated for such students all facilities should be extended through alternate means of identification...," UIDAI has said.
