What does happiness curriculum means for the students in Delhi Schools

From nursery to class 8, Delhi schools will have a special 45 period for the children named as Happiness period. This is a new initiative on the government’s part to start the happiness curriculum in schools run by the state. The entire curriculum for this will be based on activity-based learning and no formal exams will be conducted for this. However, periodic assessments will be there for the children to measure their happiness index. The curriculum includes meditation, value education, and mental exercises, and was designed by a team of 40 teachers from government schools, educators and volunteers in a period of six months. Each class will begin with a meditation and for the classes such as nursery and LKG the period will be conducted twice every week. "The curriculum will include components that will instill self-awareness and care, reduce stress and anxiety, help manage depression, build ability to focus on education & work and encourage creative critical thinking. Such a holistic approach in education will result in building healthy minds of our children that will enable them to lead a happy life," said the Delhi Government Budget 2018-2019. The new curriculum will involve 10 lakh students and 50,000 teachers from the state-run schools. According to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, there is need to introduce changes in the current education system which has been unable to produce good human beings and happiness curriculum is the first step towards that. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "It is our belief that the modern day problems like terrorism, corruption and pollution can be solved through schools and a human-centric education". He further said that the curriculum will enhance the personality of the student and will influence the direction in which we are headed as a society.
