Bombay HC: Universities should adopt uniform admission mechanism
Maharashtra government needs to adopt an uniform admission mechanism for all the students in all its universities, said The Bombay High Court. A division bench of Justices B R Gavai and M S Karnik observed disparities in the admission process of the some educational institutes as it was hearing a petition filed by the two students who challenged the decisions of two different colleges who refused them the admission in master’s course in law. The bench noted the disparity in the admission process of two colleges over the issue of which marks they should consider to grant admission to a students in the course. “On account of this disparity, students are suffering,” the court said. In some cases, universities are only considering the marks obtained by the students in final year and some universities are considering the average marks secured by the students in the years of their graduation. “We find it appropriate that at least in all the universities, which are under the control of Maharashtra state, there should be some uniform practice on this issue. One uniform mechanism needs to be followed for admission procedure,” the court said. The bench also said that colleges should refrain from using the hyper technical approach for grating the admissions to the students in various courses.
