Central Universities seeks 5600 crores to implement EWS quota
Under the ambit of newly implemented EWS quota, all the centrally funded institutes will add around 1.2 lakh seats in the upcoming new academic session and 95000 more seats in the next academic session which will commence in 2020. The central institutes were asked to increase their intake of the students without affecting the number of seats for the SC, ST, OBC and general category students. In a conference last month, the increase was pegged at 25 percent by the HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar. The increase in capacity will cost the government nearly 5600 crores based on the implementation plan shared by the central universities. The break down of the total amount is as follows: INR 3830 crores -- Building new infrastructure INR 723 crores -- salaries on account of hiring more teachers INR 1038 crores -- for fellowships As can be seen, the financial cost of implementation the EWS quota is much more than as estimated by the HRD Ministry (INR 4200 crores) earlier. In the interim budget of 2019, the government has earmarked close to INR 4600 crores for implementing the EWS quota for the poor in the General category. The 10 percent EWS quota was approved by the Union Cabinet on January 7 and its implementation across all central institutions was notified by the HRD Ministry on January 17.
