Punjab government to provide free books to the students of class 1-8
From the third week of February 2019, the Punjab government will start supplying the textbooks in the state-run schools for the academic session 2019-20. This comes as in 2017-18 academic year, the Punjab government could not provide textbooks to the students in the state-run schools even until the end of the session. During the session of 2018-19, several schools received the supply of the books months after the commencement of the academic session and later the government has to released the funds so that other schools can get the books photocopied. As of now, the government has directed all the district education officers (DEOs) and circle education officers (CEOs) to create book bank in schools and keep the previous year books so that students in the new session can be given books immediately. In an order issued, the Director General School Education (DGSE) said that the supply of the books will commence from the third week of this month. The books are being printed by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) and it has sought the exact number of students in the state-run schools so that the adequate number of books can be printed. The order further said that it would be the responsibility of the district authorities to distribute the books in a timely manner.
