Meghalaya government took steps to check the school bags’ weight
Providing a major relief to the students, the Meghalaya government has restricted the weight of the schoolbags for all classes and issued special instructions to put restrictions on homework given to the students of classes 1 and 2. The orders issued to the school authorities are in tune with the with the directives of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, said state education department official who has the knowledge of the matter. "We have issued instructions via a notification, setting limits on the weight of school bags. This is in line with the guidelines of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, keeping in mind that the weights the children carry affect their health," Education Principal Secretary D P Wahlang told PTI. The heads of the schools have also been instructed to design the timetable for the schools in a meticulous way so that students do not have to carry too many books. "The weight of school bags for classes 1 and 2 has been capped at 1.5 kg, while bags for those studying in classes 3 to 5 should not exceed 3 kg," the notification said. For the students of class 6 and 7, maximum weight of the bag should be 4 kg and for the students of 8 and 9 class, the capacity has been capped at 4.5 kg and for the class 10 students it has been capped at 5 kg. "Schools should make sure that the students are asked to carry only those textbooks that have been mentioned in their time table," the order said. Schools have also been instructed to not to assign homework to the students of class 1 and 2.
