No room rents during the lockdown – Demands Student Body

No room rents during the lockdown – Demands Student Body

Students’ Federation of India has asked the Delhi government and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to suspend the rents of the students staying in apartments in New Delhi throughout the period of lockdown. They said that several instances of landlords harassing the students for rental payments have come to their notice and this is wrong and unacceptable. The students’ body asked the authorities to compensate the landlords for the loss of income. "This is completely wrong and unacceptable. In the circular issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, dated 22nd April 2020, the government of NCT of Delhi had ordered against threats of eviction to student tenants by landlords and against the latter asking for "immediate payment of rent"," SFI Delhi said in a statement. "However, even expecting a delayed payment of rent for the preceding months post the lockdown is unacceptable since most students will not be able to afford to pay such bulk amounts at that time," it added."Given that scholarships are limited to a handful of students in our country due to increasing privatization of education, most students are dependent on their parents' income for their survival, which is uncertain in these times. This is especially true for students whose parents are daily wage laborers or informal sector workers. Even for the students availing scholarships, the disbursement of scholarships has been irregular for a very long time.  In such a situation, it is becoming increasingly difficult for students staying in rented apartments to pay rents," the statement said.

Considering the constraints of the lockdown, he said that DOPT had postponed the last date for filing of the Annual Performance Appraisal Report (APAR) by the government officials. He also said that the dates of IAS/Civil Services interview/personality test along with the Civil Services Preliminary Test will be announced after May 3. Dr. Singh also said that last week there was news of government imposing 30% reduction in the pension and discontinue pensions of elders above 80 years of age. However, as of 31st March, there is not a single pensioner whose pension was not deposited in his account.

Delhi University seeks details of online classes

Delhi University seeks details of online classes

In a letter sent to the teachers of DU, the university is seeking feedback on the online classes. However, the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) said that teachers will not fill the form as it could be used to give green light to the online exams. The details of online classes are being collected by the HRD Ministry from all the Central Universities. In a letter to the VC of the university, the DUTA has requested to withdraw the letter. "We express our utter dismay at the approach taken by the university in the face of the pandemic with respect to conduct of online classes and the forthcoming semester examinations," the association wrote to the VC. The Assistant Registrar, Colleges has asked the colleges to provide a "list of courses for which online classes are being held with the help of Google Classroom, Google Hangouts, Google Meet or Zoom", it said. "The letter does not indicate as to the purpose for which this information is being sought, that too at such short notice. We wish to point out that the format sent out to the colleges reveals extreme shortsightedness as there is no attempt whatsoever to find out how students and teachers are coping with the abrupt closure of the university due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown announced by the government," the DUTA said. The university has urged the teachers to remain in contact with the students and teachers complied by providing e-resources to the students via WhatsApp and e-mail. "The format expects teachers to answer questions in a manner that would reveal very little about the preparedness for exams or issues which they are facing," the DUTA said. "It appears that the administration is not able to appreciate the fact that the vast majority of our students face innumerable problems in accessing online classes for lack of internet services and laptops/smartphones," said DUTA to VC in a letter. The letter also highlighted the fact that the majority of students are not able to attend online classes due to poor connectivity. "Hence, to ask colleges to submit details of online classes on the format circulated is not only grossly misplaced but also indicates the complete lack of concern on the part of the authorities towards the well-being of students and teachers," the DUTA said. "Teachers, in any case, will not fill this information, which we believe could be manipulated to draw convenient conclusions in favor of the conduct of online examinations," it said.

A petition calls online exams Discriminatory

A petition calls online exams Discriminatory

Amid lockdown, as universities mull over the option of online semester exams, a petition is doing online rounds calling online exams discriminatory. The petition was started by an independent student organization based out of Delhi. So far it has got 154 supporters and seeks to get 200. The petition states that taking a cue from private universities like Amity which are conducting online exams many state universities are resorting to the same. Public institutions are the hub of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The petition reasons that home internet is available only to 12.5 % Indians as per NSSO 2014, and the majority of students find it difficult to find a corner in their home where they can concentrate and study. "The premise of any examination is that all students must be able to prepare for it on an equal footing. The internet and digital mediums can be used to promote such equality if this principle is valued but without doing so, online examinations, MCQ-based 'standardized testing' and other such alternatives only deepen the inequality of opportunity within the education system," it says. The petition raises some valid points as in the past teachers and students have come across hurdles in online education. "I'm signing this petition because even during online classes I face the network issue. So I can imagine the scenario of the examination being conducted online. And I know a few of my friends who don't even have access to the gadgets that is android phone and laptop. And if still, the university is going to conduct an online examination, it is going to be a big failure," wrote a supporter who has signed the petition.
