Delhi students will be made aware of the dangers associated with the kite strings

Delhi students will be made aware of the dangers associated with the kite strings

On Monday, the Delhi government directed the principals of the government schools to sensitize the students about the risks of flying kites with strings coated with metal. The Directorate of Education in its circular has asked heads of government, government-aided and unaided recognized schools to educate the students under the anti-kite flying campaign. The circular said that kite flying is a common practice in Delhi which sometimes hurts humans, animals and birds. The circular was issued after a 28-year old engineer died on August 15, 2019, after his throat got slit by a string of a flying kite. "Kite flying becomes lethal and hazardous because of the metal-coated string used in flying kites. Often accidents involving kite flying have been reported causing fatal injuries especially during festivals," the circular said. "It is a matter of grave concern and therefore, the passion for it among the students should be discouraged by creating awareness about the danger which kite flying can pose to people, animals and birds around," it added.Circular also added that these metal strings can interrupt electricity supply if they happen to touch the high tension lines and overhead metro electric lines proving fatal for the person holding the string as well."Therefore, all the heads of government, government- aided and unaided recognized schools under Directorate of Education are hereby directed to sensitize students and staff members during the school assembly about the menace of flying of kites," the circular said.

In UP, IITs, and IIMs to include Yoga in Curriculum

In UP, IITs, and IIMs to include Yoga in Curriculum

Leading management and technical institutes in UP will include yoga classes for the students and faculty members. The institutes are adding yoga classes to the curriculum which help future managers to maintain their cool and think objectively about the problem under the times of pressure. A senior faculty member of IIT Kanpur said that several IITs and IIMs have yoga as a part of their curriculum the efforts are on to expand them to other institutes. "The students and faculty members in these premium institutes face extreme stress conditions. The students are anxiety-ridden and this, often, makes them take steps like suicide. Yoga will help all of us to cope with the pressures and also focus on our work," said the faculty member who did not wish to be named. Sources told that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's yoga guru Dr. H.R. Nagendra has been given the responsibility to create the yoga package for these institutes. IITs in Chennai and Delhi have already included yoga in their curriculum and results have been highly favorable. Last year, IIM Ahmedabad also introduced lessons from the Bhagavad Gita which can help them in dealing with the corporate world.

CBSE to prepare easier question paper for the class 10th students for 2020 exams

CBSE to prepare easier question paper for the class 10th students for 2020 exams

Students appearing for class 10th board exams in 2020 will have an easier question set by the CBSE board. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in a tweet yesterday, said “the number of descriptive questions in class 10th question papers in many subjects have been reduced. Lesser number of descriptive questions imply that the paper will less lengthy and time-taking than it used to be”. For subjects like Hindi, English, Science, Mathematics, Social Science, Home Science, and Sanskrit CBSE has decided to reduce the number of descriptive questions in the paper. In another tweet CBSE said “2020 exam pattern change brings cheers to students: Number of descriptive questions reduced for class X including Hindi, Eng. Sc. Maths,https://t.co/phbRmjWHfY.Home Sc. Skt. This means students will get time to think write more creative answers, of course, without any stress”. At the beginning of this year, CBSE had announced some major changes in its assessment methods which help the board to reduce the gap between  learning outcomes and assessment methods. "It is a necessity now that 'assessment of learning' must be augmented with 'assessment as learning' and 'assessment for learning'", said CBSE. Under the proposed changes, CBSE question papers for class 10th will have at least 25% objective questions. Subjective questions will comprise 75% of the paper but their number will be reduced so that students will get more time to think and write answers creatively.

IIT Mandi working on technology which can convert heat into electricity

IIT Mandi working on technology which can convert heat into electricity

Researchers at IIT Mandi are working to create thermoelectric materials which can convert heat energy into electricity. While solar energy has received quite a lot of attention, other sources of energy are equally promising. Generating power from heat is attractive as there are lots of industries which utilize manpower for their day-to-day work and all that heat generated is lost. The research team is led by Ajay Soni, Associate Professor (Physics) with the School of Basic Sciences which is studying materials that can convert heat into electricity. The team is researching on thermoelectric materials and many of its papers have been published in reputed peer-review international journals, including Applied Physics Letters, Physical Review B and Journal of Alloys and Compounds."Thermoelectric materials work on the principle of Seebeck effect, in which electricity is generated due to temperature differences across the junction of two materials," Mr Soni said. Many big companies such as Volkswagen, Volvo, Ford and BMW, are developing thermoelectric waste heat recovery system which promises to offer three to five percent improvement in the fuel economy. About 70 percent of the heat energy is wasted globally and released into the atmosphere becoming one of the key drivers of global warming.

The Research team from IIT Guwahati developed a device which can separate oil from water

At IIT Guwahati, researcher have developed two membranes which can separate oil from water even under the harsh conditions. The membranes are super-water repellent in air and super-oil repellent in water can separate complex mixture of oil and water. The phenomenon of separating oil from water is of extreme importance considering its application in oil spill management. The research was led by Dr. Uttam Manna, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati and his team -- Mr. Avijit Das, Ms. Dibyangana Parbat and Ms. Arpita Shome and was published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering. Speaking on the need of separating oil from water, Dr. Uttam Manna said, "Oil-water separation is of current relevance because many industries, such as mining, textiles, food and petrochemicals, produce massive volumes of oily wastewater, which must be treated before discharge." In recent times, material scientists haven cue from the environment for this purpose. The lotus leaf is water repellent so that it does not get soggy in water and fish has a body surface which is water repellent so that it can survive in polluted waters. Scientists have studies these surfaces so that they can be developed artificially for oil-water separation applications. However, the problem is that water and oil start to accumulate over time rendering them inefficient over time. "There is yet another problem with conventional demonstration, where the superhydrophobic and superoleophobic materials are mostly used for two-phase oil/water mixtures. However, those approaches are inappropriate for separation of three-phase mixtures of heavy oil, light oil and water," added Dr. Manna. To over the problem his team developed ‘a system of 'super liquid repellent' materials’ which have practical applications in industries.

CBSE mulling over the idea to increase objective questions in exams

CBSE mulling over the idea to increase objective questions in exams

From next year onward, fewer candidates will find the question papers of board exams lengthy as CBSE is mulling over the idea to reduce the number of questions in majority of exams from 2020.For example, in a stipulated time of the 3 hours, under the new changes, candidates will now have to attempt only 12 questions in math exams as against 19 in 2019. Candidates will also get more internal options (33 percent), which means that candidates will be required to attempt only 10 questions out of 13-14 questions.Another big change on CBSE’s mind is to increase the number of objective questions which in some subjects range from 16.25% to 95% in some subjects, up from 10-12%. As of now, these changes are listed in only CBSE’s documents, “Details of internal and external assessment in the year 2019-20”.To drive students away from rote learning, CBSE has already introduced practicals in all subjects.CBSE secretary Anurag Tripathi when asked about decreasing the length of the exams said that there will be no compromise with the quality of the question paper. “The question papers will be developed scientifically without any compromise on quality. In fact, with more objective type questions, the students will need more detailed study. With internal assessment/practicals, students will move out of the habit of rote learning and schools can engage them with more experiential learning.”According to the CBSE, sample papers are being prepared by the subject experts and will soon be made available on the official website of the CBSE.
