Jadavpur University to take a final call on Supplementary exams

Jadavpur University to take a final call on Supplementary exams

Jadavpur University will soon take a final call on the supplementary exams. Supplementary exams were to be held for the students who had failed in previous semester exams. The examination committee including university officials will meet next week or this week for the final decision, an official said. Considering the present situation, it may not be possible to hold supplementary tests along with the final semester exams. We will be discussing if the students of Arts, Science and Engineering faculties can be given grace marks for the previous semester exams they have either failed or unable to attend," the official said. “As classes remain suspended since March 17 and many students do not have the facility for online classes, they might not be able to prepare for the supplementary exams along with that of the current semester papers. We will arrive at a decision acceptable to everyone. Since the date of opening the campus remains uncertain, we have to act quickly,” he added. Already there is a broad agreement among students and faculties to not to conduct exam but this needs final approval from the exam committee, the official added further. As per the current proposal, 40-50 percent weightage will be given to the previous semester performances, classwork/projects and viva. The rest of the weightage will be given based on the exam in which students will appear from their home. The home exams can be conducted online or by sending question papers to the students’ homes. Arts Faculty Students' Union chairperson Teena Bhattacharya said, "We are looking at the outcome of the meeting. There can be a broad formula for all the departments. But a particular yardstick may not be applicable in case of each and every department." "We hope that in this unprecedented situation, an acceptable solution will be arrived at to the satisfaction of everyone without compromising on health issues," she added.

IIT Gandhinagar devise new grading system for online classes

IIT Gandhinagar devise new grading system for online classes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar will commence the online classes to complete various courses of second semester. The institute has also decided not to give any grade for any courses, including the one that have been completed before. In the place of old grades new grades -- ‘P(E)’ and ‘I/F’ have been introduced. The ‘P(E)’ grade is a Pass Emergency grade but will be treated differently than the usual ‘P’ grade. The ‘I/F’ grade denotes ‘Incomplete/Fail’ but will not distinguish between incomplete and fail, the institute informed. All the students with ‘I/F’ grade will have one opportunity to complete the course requirement and improve their performance and earn ‘P(E)’ grade. The deadline for the same will be communicated to the students. Elaborating on the new grading system, Prof. Pratik Mutha, Dean (Academic Affairs), IIT Gandhinagar, said, “If a student’s performance does not warrant a ‘P(E)’ grade even after this evaluation, the ‘I/F’ grade will be converted to a traditional ‘F’ grade and the credits for this course will naturally not be counted towards the graduation requirements. Thus, an ‘I/F’ grade will not show on a student’s final official record. Neither the ‘P(E)’ nor the ‘F’ grades of Semester II, 2019-20 will be counted in the CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) calculation.” For MTech and PhD students, he said “the grades for thesis units will continue to be either ‘S’ or ‘U’ as is usually practiced. However, any ‘U’ grade awarded in Semester II, 2019-20 will be dropped from the student’s record. Graduation requirements remain unchanged.”

Economics teachers a from DU oppose online exam

More than 170 economic professors from DU are resisting online exam. They have issued a joint letter opposing the idea of online exam. However, they also suggested some alternatives to conduct the exams. "Based on strong student feedback and our own experience of the unsatisfactory and limited scope and coverage of online classes, we feel that there are very serious hindrances to time-bound online open book examinations in the pattern suggested by the university," says the letter. The teachers refer to the issue of having poor connectivity or no internet connectivity at all. They said that they faced issued while teaching online. Another hurdle in conducting online exam is scanning and uploading the answer sheets. 'The server may take hours to upload and many students' internet connection may be weak to sustain this process,' says the letter. Students who went back home during the midterm break and did not had proper study material. Not all the study material is uploaded online. Many students do not own a computer and they cannot be expected to prepare using their mobiles. The letter also pointed that domestic environment of some students may not be conducive for the exams. Teachers also expressed their concerns regarding the sanctity of the exam conducted in online mode. "As this is designed to be online examinations, how will the university ensure that the answers that the students are uploading are not copied from each other (through parallel internet communication) or dictated by someone else? This problem cannot be avoided by making it open book because open book exams are open about source material but they strictly bar communication with anybody else, which can be easily violated here," states the letter. The teachers also raised their concerns about the choice of questions to be provided to the students. The university was closed before the completion of the course and online teaching experience was very uneven the range of choice should be much more than usual. The letter also suggested some alternatives saying “for the final semester, students can be assessed based on internal assessment and no grades should be assigned for this semester's papers at all. Students would need to pass their course based on the respective internal assessments and no grades for these courses will be mentioned in the grade-sheet. Many Universities in USA are following this similar method.”
