School teacher assaulted in Delhi; Teachers ask for more security

School teacher assaulted in Delhi; Teachers ask for more security

One of the students of Delhi Government School was assaulted with an iron rod because he rebuked the student on the basis of low attendance in school. With this incident, the fellow teachers have raised their voices questioning the security protocol within the school premises and demanded more security from the school authorities. Teachers of the government school have been demanding more security for their safety after a teacher (government) school was stabbed to death by two class XII students after he rusticated one of them for low attendance. Earlier this year, a teacher in Delhi was assaulted by the parents of a student. The teacher assaulted was 53-year old and has sustained injuries on head, above his ear and on his cheek. “He is currently feeble and requires time to recover. We can’t say when he will be in a condition to resume his duties. He has been working as a teacher all his life and is just seven years away from his retirement,” said his son. Ajay Veer Yadav, general secretary of the Government School Teachersʼ Association (GSTA), said that a meeting of the teachers will be held at the schools and the next step will be decided based on the inputs from the teachers. “Every teacher is in fear because of periodic cases of assault. There has to be an increase in security at the schools, with the number of guards deployed in ratio with the students — one guard per 100 students. There are only three guards in each school, which might have 5,000 students. Further the guards recruited from the agencies are completely untrained,” he said. However, Director of Education Sanjay Goel, said: “Even if the number of guards are increased, unfortunate incidents like this can still occur. In any case, the government is soon going to be increasing the number of guards in each school, but this is for the safety of the students, especially girls. These guards will be placed at the gates to protect students from outsiders.” Yadav further added that another major demand from the teachers is to stop the entry of the outsiders into the schools. He further claimed that the vulnerability of the teachers has increased due to the powers vested in the School Management Committee. “The SMCs, of which parents are members, have completely captured power over the principals and teachers, and humiliate us in front of students, which erodes their respect for us. Where is our dignity?” he said.

Researchers at IIT-Madras developed India’s first microprocessor

Researchers at IIT-Madras have developed India’s first Microprocessor which can be used in mobile computing devices, embedded low power wireless systems and networking systems and will help India to reduce its reliance on imported Microprocessors in Communications and Defence Sectors. A statement from the institute said that “the Microprocessor can be used by others as it is on par with International Standards”. The ‘SHAKTI’ family of microprocessors was fabricated at Semi-Conductor Laboratory of Indian Space Research Organizations (ISRO) in Chandigarh. It is the first 'RISC V Microprocessor' to designed and completely made in India. According to the statement the most crucial aspect of the indigenous design is the reduced risk of deploying the systems which may be affected by the backdoors and viruses. This achievement of India will assume huge significance when systems powered the SHAKTI microprocessors will be deployed in strategic sectors such as defense, nuclear power installations and Government Agencies and Departments. "With the advent of Digital India there are several applications that require customizable processor cores. The 180nm fabrication facility at SCL Chandigarh is crucial in getting these cores manufacturers within our Country," lead researcher Prof Kamakoti Veezhinathan, IIT Madras, said. In another statement IIT Madras said “SHAKTI processor family targets clock speeds to suit various end-user application devices such as various consumer electronic devices, mobile computing devices, embedded low power wireless systems and networking systems, among others”. HTET 2018 exam postponed again; Check the new dates

The dates for the HTET 2018 exam have been changed again. According to the reports, the exam will be conducted on January 5, and January 6, 2019. Earlier, the exam had been scheduled in November but was postponed to December (22, 23, 30 and 31, 2018). The change in the dates is due to the exams scheduled by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC). Usually, the board needs three months to prepare for the exam but by the time their proposed schedule was proposed the board of school was only left with one and half month to prepare for the exam. Venkaiah Naidu insisted on cutting the syllabi for the school children in half

On Wednesday, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said that the syllabi for the school children in the nation should be halved and students should learn 50 percent in classrooms and the rest 50 percent should come from the playground. M Venkaiah Naidu said this when he was interacting with the students of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The Vice President said that the exams should measure the capacity of children to question the things around them. He also urged the young students to never let their marks define them. “You are much more than the numbers on your report card,” he told the students. “Along with physical fitness, schools should also encourage other extracurricular activities,” an official release quoted the Vice President. “The syllabi for school children in the country should be halved and students should learn 50 per cent from their classrooms and the rest from playgrounds,” he said. #MeToo: Victim of sexual harassment being punished for standing against it

#MeToo: Victim of sexual harassment being punished for standing against it

A final-year student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) has accused the director of the institute, Bhupendra Kainthola, for creating a hostile work environment for her as she stood against the sexual harassment at the institute. The director described the allegations of the student as wild and imaginary. The 2016 batch student, in a four-page complaint letter sent to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has said that her harassment at the institute started after she testified against a faculty member who was accused of harassing three female students of the institute. The senior faculty member has been removed however, in August the female herself was expelled from the college for an entire semester on the grounds of professional misconduct and academic indiscipline during the production of the academic project. Earlier, the complainant had also filed a report of her sexual harassment by a male batch-mate. In her report, she said that she was assaulted by the male batch-mate after he entered her hotel room in the dead of the night when a group of the students was visiting Aurangabad along with a faculty member in April 2018. The male student was suspended from the hostel for three months and was told to attend the therapy sessions. For professional misconduct, the institute had barred her from sending her projects for the film festival. In her letter, she said that the punishment is unheard in the history of FTTI and this had confirmed her fears that she is being targeted for the raising her voice against the sexual harassment. Kainthola had denied all her claims and said that they beg credibility and is just an attempt to cover her professional fraud.

IIT-Madras writes to HRD after being denied the Eminence tag

IIT-Madras writes to HRD after being denied the Eminence tag

In what appears to be a deep disappointment IIT-Madras has written to the Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar expressing their concerns for not selecting the Institute for the Eminence tag although, the name of the Institute was recommended by the UGC-mandated selection panel. Pawan Goenka, Industrialist and IIT-Madras chairman, has expressed the concerns of the Board of Governors (BoG) of the institute to the Javadekar in a letter almost after a month of announcements of IoE names. The Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) was entrusted with the task of finding 20 IoEs out of 114 applicants. The committee has recommended the names of the 11 institutes for the same. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, Delhi University, Jadavpur University and Anna University were recommended under the public category, in that order. BITS-Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and Reliance Foundation’s proposed Jio Institute were suggested under the private category. The UGC on the other hand forwarded only six names to the government on July 9 -- three public and three private. According to the UGC IISc, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi were chosen based on their performance in the QS World University Rankings 2018. Criticizing the Commission’s decision of ignoring the IIT-Madras, Goenka wrote to Javadekar “BoG was surprised that the Commission used rankings by a commercial agency to select only three public institutions from the EEC list. The selection, he is learned to have written, was neither based on the findings of the EEC nor the government’s own National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF).” In the NIRF rankings, IIT-Madras has been assessed as best engineering institute of the nation from past three consecutive years. There were rumors of public institutions not being happy about the selection procedure, especially whose names were not forwarded by the UGC, IIT-Madras is the first to pen down its disappointment in the government’s decision.

Vice President urged to overhaul the entire nation’s education system

Vice President urged to overhaul the entire nation’s education system

Vice President on Monday said that the entire education system of the nation needs an overhaul as it is producing students with the degrees and not the minds with critical thinking power and employable skills. He emphasized on the need of restoring India as the prime destination of the quality education in the world and said that the number of educational institutes should be increased in the nation to meet the growing demands of the students who wish to pursue the higher education. Naidu also asked the private universities to reserve a certain percentage of quality education for the students from the poor section of the society as private sector education has gone out of bounds for the students from the marginalized sector. "Majority of our colleges have become mere breeding centers for producing students with degree certificates rather than individuals with critical analytical skills and innovative thinking," Naidu said while addressing the convocation of Lovely Professional University here. "Most of the times, students passing out of colleges do not possess employable skills. It is a matter of concern that we are turning out lakhs of students each year from the portals of our colleges with emphasis only on theoretical knowledge. We are merely adding numbers and not individuals with critical minds,"," he added. "There is a need to completely overhaul our education system. We cannot allow the status quo to continue. We need to change the system and the change has to be for good," he said further. He further said that is is high time for the universities to forge organic links with the industries to provide pragmatic and real-time knowledge to the students as per the requirements of the industries. "Although, some universities are acting in this direction, it is not enough and there is a need for a paradigm shift in teaching and learning methodologies of our universities to enable the students face global competition effectively and with confidence," he said. "But simply an increase in numbers without ensuring quality would be detrimental to national interests. We need to restore India's ancient glory as a prime destination of quality higher education," he said. He further said that it is also the responsibility of the private sector to play a vital role in meeting the demands of the education.

CAT 2018 and the importance of Mock tests analysis in CAT exam preparation

CAT 2018 and the importance of Mock tests analysis in CAT exam preparation

Giving Mock Tests is an important part of any exam preparation especially, if the exam is the Common Admission Test (CAT). Giving Mock tests not only help the students in revision, but they also help in discovering weak areas and help students define strategies for taking the test on actual exam day. Any good mock tests will also include all the surprise elements of the CAT exam which examiners can throw at the students. According to the experts, giving mock tests and then analyzing them thoroughly is the most important tool that will shape any students’ performance as they prepare for the zero-day. Important steps in analyzing the mock tests The detailed analysis of the mock test is an important part of the preparation strategy. Apart from investing the time in giving mock tests students must spend equal time in analyzing the test once they have completed it. In fact, the priority must be given to those questions where a considerable amount of time was spent on a solution but the answer was wrong. The second priority must be given to the questions which were shortlisted for the answer but their solution consumed more than the stipulated time. It is a no-brainer that maximizing the score in CAT exam depends on filtering out the right questions. The difficult questions or questions which were out-of-the-box must be analyzed in the end. Do not leave them and try to learn a new concept presented in them so that similar questions can be attempted in the forthcoming tests, if time permits.Don’t be burdened with the fluctuation in the scores during the mock tests. They can be because you are not giving the test with your full concentration or are too tired to give it at all.Mock tests one week prior to the final exam tests your consistency, intelligence and hard work that you have put in during the past months. So, think of them final rehearsals before the main exam.

CLAT 2019 | The exam will turn to a traditional offline mode with subjective questions

CLAT 2019 | The exam will turn to a traditional offline mode with subjective questions

CLAT 2019 will be conducted offline. The decision to hold CLAT 2019 in offline mode was taken at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore because of the various technical glitches that occurred in the previously held online exams. In 2018, the CLAT exam was conducted on May 13 in online mode but the experience of the students was not good. They reported various irregularities during the exam and demanded to re-conduct the exam. Apart from holding the CLAT offline, it was also decided to add some subjective questions in the exam for the LLM. The details of the subjective portion of the exam will be decided by the CLAT executive committee. Also, to improve the quality of the question paper, a question bank will be prepared with the contribution of all the experts from all the NLUs. The suggestion to increase the exam center was also put on the table during the meeting but that is entirely dependent on the number of students applying for the CLAT 2019 exam. CBSE affiliation process undergoes a major change for the new schools

CBSE affiliation process undergoes a major change for the new schools

MHRD Ministry has introduced some major reforms in the CBSE affiliation process for the new schools. The Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar made the announcement regarding the changes. One of the major changes introduced involves moving the entire process online for more transparency. Addressing the media personnel regarding the same Javadekar said ‘there are currently 20,700 schools affiliated with CBSE in the country and every year the board receives 2000 to 2500 applications for opening new schools.’ He also said that NOC inspection which was earlier part of the affiliation process has been removed. Now, schools who want to apply for the affiliation will have to get NOC from the district education officer, who will inspect the infrastructure of the school. After the NOC is done, CBSE will do another inspection to check the learning outcomes. Javadekar said this was done to remove the unnecessary duplicate work at the state and central level and CBSE will only inspect the parameters related to the academics. He further told that CBSE is asking the schools to give undertakings on very vital matters such as inclusion of sports in schools, disclosing the entire fee structure, etc. Schools are required to provide undertaking on all these matters and those who fail to abide by the rules will lose their CBSE affiliation. He also said that schools cannot ask the students to buy books and uniforms from a particular vendor.

DU’s chemistry department cannot fill in the blanks for the missing staff

DU’s chemistry department cannot fill in the blanks for the missing staff

Earlier DU had hired teaching staff to fill in the vacancies in Delhi University's chemistry department, but many of them are retired teachers and some are even PhD students designated as 'teaching assistants', a post no longer accepted by the university. Many of the hired teachers also claimed that they did not receive any appointment letter. Due to the shortage of the faculty, the university has asked the chemistry department to hire the teachers on the ad-hoc basis and department head Ramesh Chandra named retired teachers, faculty from the Department of Science and Technology Inspire and PhD students for these posts in July. Some teachers from the university also claimed that these teachers did not go through proper selection channel and their competency to teach the MSc. students is questionable. NK Kaushik, who retired from the chemistry department is yet to report to the work. He told "I was indeed approached to teach in the department, but was never given any appointment letter. I had also told the HoD that my eyesight was weak and I was slated for a surgery." Another teacher from the Hindu College, Ram Saran also has a similar tale. "I did not receive any communication to join as a teacher. I am not sure why my name is being included as a teacher without my consent." The names of both the teachers are however included in the DU’s semester timetable. Two PhD students have also been appointed as teaching assistants. "As teaching assistants, we were asked to aid the teachers when they conduct practicals," said Ravi Tomar, one of the two. When asked how the posts for the teachers were filled, Chandra said "The retired teachers and those from DST Inspire are better than some of the ad hocs available."
