‘WhatsFarzi’ app to detect fake news

‘WhatsFarzi’ app to detect fake news

In order to fight the menace of fake news on social media, three students of Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi have developed an app called ‘WhatsFarzi’. The app scans through the internet content and collect the news on topics to verify their credibility from the credible sources. The app is also capable of verifying whether an image or video has been tampered with. “One of my students started researching on the rapid spread of fake content on Twitter and Facebook, which inspired him to develop a Google Chrome browser extension for both the platforms. The continuous research by the team gradually gave birth to WhatsFarzi, which is now helping the vexed Indians to fight back such terrors”, said Ponnurangam Kumaraguru, associate professor at IIIT-Delhi. ‘WhatsFarzi’ app is the brain child of three computer science students from IIIT Delhi namely -- Madhur Tandon (22), Suryatej Reddy Vyalla (20) and Dhruv Kuchhal (23). Suryatej Reddy, a third-year student, said, “We use a knowledge graph to extract relevant information from people, organizations, locations and products available on the internet, update this graph with credible news, and store it in a secured database. We follow this process to verify textual claims.”

From 2019, 10th pass polytechnic holders are eligible for admission in the first year of B.Tech. in any stream. Although, the option of lateral admission in the B.Tech. third semester will still remain open for the students but under this they can only take admission in the same branch that they studied in diploma. The new option will be effective from the new academic year which will commence in July, 2019 through Rajasthan Engineering Admission Process (REAP).

Madhyamik examination question papers leaked on Social media again

Madhyamik examination question papers leaked on Social media again

Shorty after the test commenced, the question papers of the Madhyamik Examination were reportedly leaked online and this happened on the sixth consecutive day. In the last five days, images of physical science question paper were circulated on Whats App due to which political parties in West Bengal had to face sharp criticism. Madhyamik exams, are the class 10th board exams conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE). "For 6 consecutive days, #question leaked in Madhyamik examination. Never happened in #WB. A devastating situation. A destroyed education scenario," CPI(M) MLA Sujan Chakraborty said in a tweet. Kalyanmoy Ganguly, refused to comment on the situation. He is the president of WBBSE. Partha Chatterjee, West Bengal Education Minister, has sought a report on the leaked question papers. The investigation is being carried out by the CID and it has already arrested five people in the case. Chatterjee saved his position by arguing that an exam is considered leaked if the question paper is available before the commencement of the exam not after. The CPI(M)'s students wing -- SFI and youth wing DYFI -- has criticized the WBBSE for the leak. In the past five days, the question papers of Bengali, English, History, Geography and Mathematics were leaked on social media.

Wrong distribution of questions papers by the CBSE called for re-test of KVS candidates

Wrong distribution of questions papers by the CBSE called for re-test of KVS candidates

Recently, CBSE has been in news for the all the wrong reasons. Last year, the leak of the board question papers gave a devastating blow to the image of the CBSE and recently, the board has re-conducted two crucial teacher recruitment tests at some centers. The KVS recruitment exam for the post of PGT and TGT teachers was re-conducted by the CBSE (for Varanasi Test Center) on December 20,2018 as candidates were distributed wrong question papers. The CTET test was also re-conducted by the CBSE on December 22 (first conducted on December 9) as CBSE misplaced the answer scripts of some of the candidates. CBSE spokesperson Rama Sharma said “one center at Varanasi had erred in the distribution of the test booklet of session-I of KVS Examination held on 23.12.2018”. “The error was detected after a little while. By that time, candidates had written their details in the test booklet and the affected candidates immediately demanded retest. Teachers stand united against the Education policy of the Delhi Government

Teachers stand united against the Education policy of the Delhi Government

Thousands of teachers in Delhi took the streets in a clear mutiny with what they called the ‘saffronization’ of the education by the PM Modi’s government. The teachers called for a ‘free and affordable education and dignified employment’ and to reserve the ‘right to education for everyone’. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Delhi University professor Najma Rehmani said, “The government is slowly destroying the public education system, and giving preference to private education. The government schools in states are not getting money and aid from the center, and it’s a big jolt to the federal structure of India, which is the current government destroying slowly.” “The school syllabus is designed in a way to destroy the components of secularism. The government is giving preferences to Hindu ideology in the school books and prayers which is harming the idea of India at the end,” said protesting professor. Rehmani also brought up the issue of the vacant teaching posts in schools and universities and government’s lazy attitude towards filling them. “The government is planning to terminate various vacant posts in the colleges and universities after the introduction of the new department-wise roster,” she said. Around 55 percent teachers posts for the reserved category candidates are lying vacant in the universities which have not been filled by the educational institutions despite repeated reminders from the University Grants Commission. The professor also condemned the government’s decision to provide autonomy to colleges under Delhi University. “It (autonomy) gives the college the right to decide course fees for various courses, and normally the course fees are much higher than formulated by the University. It’s only creating a gap between the economically weaker and rich sections in higher studies,” Rehmani said.

About 10 applicants of the MPSC (Maharashtra Public Service Commission) prelims exam were not allowed to enter the exam hall as they missed the deadline by few minutes. These applicants will have to appear again next year for the prelims exam. Rahul Indure, who was appearing for the exam for the first time said that his train from Pune got delayed by 1 hour as a result he reached the center at 9:33 am but exam coordinators turned him away for being late. Another applicant, Chaitrali Vispute, told that she was asked by the coordinators to get a colored photocopy of the identity proof and by the time she returned it was 9:32 am. “While I was sent to get the coloured copy, I learnt that the coordinators started accepting black- and-white copies of other students,” she said. CBSE introduced reforms to make board exams stress-free

CBSE introduced reforms to make board exams stress-free

In an attempt to reduce the stress on the students, which they during the board exam times, CBSE has increased the number of optional questions which will make it easier for the students to attempt and complete the paper. According to a recent CBSE report, which highlighted new reforms introduced by the CBSE for board exams 2019, there will be changes in question paper as students will now have 33 percent extra internal choice in the questions. According to an official from the CBSE, multiple choice questions can test the students on higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in addition to the practical application of the concept. "CBSE is introducing a fixed percentage of multiple choice questions to increase the objectivity of assessment and also to improve the quality of evaluation," an official, who has the knowledge of the matter, said. "It is envisaged that students will have the option of attempting different types of questions. These questions will be from any unit of the syllabus and therefore, students will have to go through the entire portion, or the assigned chapters as per the sample blueprint of question paper released by the Board. The question papers will also have long answer questions," adds the official. The former principal of Delhi Public School, RK Puram, says, "I have spoken to a few principals and they are very pleased with 33% extra internal choices. The report also says that consideration will be given to creative answers, in which case there is no doubt that these changes are in the best interests of the students. It is true but unfortunate that those who check the papers go strictly by the sample answers in each paper in every subject and this would be an issue as we need creative teachers to understand the difference," as she talked about the new initiatives by the CBSE. "I do hope that the question papers will be balanced; divided equally in different learning modes that are, memory, understanding, application, analysis, synthesis and finally creativity which has been mentioned in the report," she added.

Self-defense soon to become part of Maharashtra Government’s school curriculum

Self-defense soon to become part of Maharashtra Government’s school curriculum

Maharashtra government is mulling over the idea of making training in self-defense as a part of school curriculum in the state. The assurance was given by the State Education Minister Vinod Tawde as a response to an online petition filed by a woman self-defense coach from Pune, Neha Shrimal. The petition was posted on Change.org in September last year. Shrimal is a mother of a seven-year-old girl and had demanded that self-defense training is made compulsory in all state-run schools. The petition was supported by a large number of people as it received 1.38 lakh signatures in support. In the petition, Shrimal gave an example of an 18-year-old girl from West Bengal who fought against three men harassing her and handed them to the police. "This brave student shows us that girls can be empowered to face such situations with confidence, rather than feeling scared, victimized and helpless. "In India, over 53% children face sexual abuse. Whenever any such incidence happens, we just look at police and legal system for help. We never imagine that a girl can also have the power to deal with such situations. I believe that every child should be trained to protect themselves from an early age. I am asking Maharashtra Government to make self-defense training compulsory for all the students from 5th standard onwards," she said. According to her, self-defense is not a martial arts but a psychological, mental and physical preparedness to deal with the dangers of an unwanted situation. In his online reply, Tawde said, "The first petition that I have received is from a Pune citizen and a mother, Neha Shrimal. Neha and 1.37 lakh citizens have asked me to Make self-defense training compulsory for all the schools in Maharashtra. I have heard you and 1.37 lakh citizens." "Taking due cognizance of the petition, I am now considering running the programme, and making it a part of the curriculum. We recently decided to introduce an hour-long sports session for school students. And we are planning to introduce self-defense as a part of these sessions. With this, we have decided to start mandatory self-defense training in schools," he said.

ICAI to train one lakh student in GST Accountancy

The Institute of Charted Accountants of India (ICAI) is all set to launch Goods and Services Tax (GST) Accountants course and will train around one lakh students in coming one-and-a-half year, said ICAI president Amit Anand Apte. According to the reports, the fees of training the students will be fully funded by the Government of India. The main objective of the program is to increase the GST compliance in the SME sector as there is a shortage of trained resources and requirements. "GST Accountants programme will be launched very soon. About 1 lakh accountants will be trained specifically on GST compliances. We are working out the modalities with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the course would be tentatively launched by February end," Apte said. One of the major challenges before the GoI is that SMEs are not fully able to comply with the GST law because of the lack of trained accountants in the sector who can adhere to the GST provisions. Once these accountants are trained, the GST compliance in the SME sector will improve drastically. About the course The students will be given 50 hours of classroom trainingThe course content will also have 10hours of live practical training where students will be trained in the computerized filing of the returns in various GST officesThe course would be conducted through ICAI's 98 chapters and about 300 extension centres across the country.
