NITs cite COVID-19 to seek extension to implement EWS quota

After IITs, NITs have approached the government requesting extension to implement EWS quota. NIT-Allahabad director Rajeev Tripathi, also head of the Central Seat Allocation Board this year has written to HRD Ministry this week regarding the issue. The Board is responsible for conducting admissions to the 31 NITs. In the letter he said that ensuring social distancing in hostel is a challenge and construction of new hostels were halted due to lockdown. On June 3, IITs have also written to the HRD Ministry in which they seek more time for implementing EWS quota. All centrally funded educational institutions, including IITs, NITs, IIMs, central universities, IISERs, and IIITs have to increase overall study strength by 25 percent ensuring that existing number of seats for SC, ST, OBC and general category students do not face cuts. An official source said “NITs have to collectively add 7,256 seats over two years to accommodate the quota. Among the 31 NITs, a few implemented the quota in undergraduate courses last year. The request for extension is for institutions that are to implement it this year”.
