IIT-KGP’s medical course to debut in the Academic year 2021

IIT Kharagpur’s super-specialty hospital, Dr. B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research, is expected to start its outdoor patient department by the end of this year, said an official. Once the hospital is operational, the institute will roll out its MBBS program for the Academic year 2021. In the first phase, the institute will open the admission window for the 50 students. In a statement, IIT-KGP said that the curriculum will be based on the guidelines issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI). IIT-KGP aims to make health care data science as one of the major areas of research as it enters into the medical field. In due time, the institute will also offer PG degrees in medical sciences as well. The hospital’s board of directors will be headed by the IIT Kharagpur director along with the senor IIT faculties."While 10% of the beds would be free, 65% of the beds would be charged as per the rates in the central and state health insurance schemes, "said Officiating Director Prof. Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya. The institute has also decided to set up mobile health care units as it is anticipating a heavy influx of patients. "Basic diagnostics and treatment will be done by these mobile units, which will reduce the patient load in the hospital," said Dr. Satadal Saha, project director and visiting faculty at IIT Kharagpur. The institute has already formed a collaboration with the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, Tata Medical Center and South Eastern Railway Hospital.
