SSC 2017 result | SC issued stay order on the result

SSC 2017 result | SC issued stay order on the result

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a stay order on the final results of the 2017 SSC CGL and CHSL exam giving a major blow to the exam authority. In its observation, the apex court said, “Prima facie entire SSC system and examination are tainted,” reported PTI. The court also said that it cannot allow the candidates benefiting from the SSC exam to get into the service. Several cracks were identified in the SSC examination system during the CBI inquiry, which was ordered to probe the allegations of the paper leak ahead of the examination. During the inquiry, a joint team of Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and Delhi Police busted a syndicate which consisted of solvers who help the candidate cheat in the exam with the help of software, Team Viewer. “The accused persons would gain access to the computer systems of the candidates who paid the money. The solver would then answer all the questions using the software. When the Team Viewer software could not be used, they would take control of the computer by fixing the LAN connections with that of another computer in the exam center and answer all the questions,” DSP (UP STF) Brijesh Singh had said. According to the police, the gang started operating in 2011 back when SSC papers were conducted in pen and paper mode and later switch to use of Team Viewer Software when the commission shifted to the online mode of exam.

More than a quarter of EWS seats in Delhi government schools are vacant

According to the feedback given by the Directorate of Education (DOE), more than 0ne-fourth of the seats reserved for the students of EWS (Economically Weaker Section) and disadvantaged categories are vacant in the private schools of the Delhi as students did not report for the admissions. According to the official records, seats close to 12,600 have been reported empty out of total 48,122 available seats. “These are especially in good/ reputed schools, there is no reason why parents should not report for admissions,” state the minutes of a DOE meeting held on August 16. The minutes of the meeting also shows that schools have completed 31726 admissions under the category and 1725 are on the waitlist. The fourth round of the lucky draw for the allotment of the seats was held by the Directorate on August 21, 2018. According to the right to Education Act, 25 percent seats are reserved for the students from the EWS category. As mentioned in the minutes of the meetings, the District Deputy Education officers have been directed to check with the parents if they were denied admissions in the schools. “If some parents (from the general category) approached schools and the school rejected them, that goes on to prove that the school deliberately curtailed general category admissions in order to avoid EWS/DG admissions at entry level. Action against such schools must be initiated,” the minutes state. According to the norms, children who do not report with the documents whose names have been selected for the admissions are marked as unreported.

JNUTA | The university is trying to suppress our voices

JNUTA | The university is trying to suppress our voices

The teachers association at the JNU university said that the university is trying to suppress the voice of the elected teacher representatives. The administration of the university has issued a show cause notice to the 48 teachers for participating in a strike on July 31 against the policies of the university. The decision to issue a notice to the teachers was taken at the Executive Council meeting, said JNU Professor Ayesha Kidwai. The teachers association said “it takes serious note of the extremely hostile attitude of the University Administration towards teachers reflected in the 275th Executive Council Meeting. After trying to suppress the voice of elected teacher representatives, the Administration pushed for several anti-teacher decisions and ratification of such decisions already made by the Vice-Chancellor. In what must be a record of sorts, illegitimate denial of even stage-change promotions of 4 Assistant Professors were brought to the EC for ratification but no explanation was forthcoming about the grounds on which their outstanding academic records were completely overlooked.” The association further said that the administration is working to solve the problems which it itself has created. "Once again, the Vice Chancellor got the EC to approve the addition of several names to panels of experts for selection committees without these names being approved by the Centers or even by the Academic Council," association said. It further added that the decision to hold online entrance exams involving the outside experts was taken without proper discussions, opinions, and evaluating its financial implication on the university and students. "On the other hand, the Administration failed to itself bring on the agenda the issue of a disastrous cut in grants. When this matter was raised, the Administration admitted to the fact of the cut - from over Rs 8 crores to 1.7 crores - but treated it as if this was a minor matter," it added. The teachers said that they will not be intimidated and they have proved it time and again.

Students flunked class 10th exam; Delhi HC scolded the schools for issuing TC

Students flunked class 10th exam; Delhi HC scolded the schools for issuing TC

Students cannot be thrown out of government school, the Delhi High Court said as it was hearing a plea seeking the directions for the government schools to grant admissions to the 42,503 children, who had failed the class 10th CBSE board exams 2018. The application in this regard was filed by the NGO Social Jurist. The court asked the authorities how could throw the students out of the schools and where will they go. Advocate Ashok Agarwal, appearing for the NGO, claimed that by refusing admissions to the 42,503 students who had flunked their class 10th CBSE 2018 board exams, the Delhi’s government schools are violating Delhi School Education Rules. The plea alleged that instead of granting such students admissions in the same class, the school authorities forced them to take the ‘transfer certificates’ and asked them to opt for the National Institute of Open Schooling instead. According to the reports, nearly, 1.36 lakh students appeared for the class 10th exam from the government schools of which 94,160 passed and 42,503 failed. Lessons that Atal Bihari Vajpayee taught to Young India

Lessons that Atal Bihari Vajpayee taught to Young India

Politics is often characterized by the strong likes, hard decisions, and even stronger dislikes and is, therefore, a double-edged sword, even for the best of the politicians. The actions of the ministers are not only closely covered by media but also spread around the globe like a wildfire through social media, trolls, news and other means. So, for most of the politicians politics and power accompanied with it is an end in itself and not a means to achieve something greater. But, Vajpayee was different as was more pragmatic in his approach when it comes to the country’s welfare. He managed t...

IITs rejected the proposed changes in the JEE Advanced exam

IITs rejected the proposed changes in the JEE Advanced exam

On Monday, IITs rejected the government’s proposal to set up a committee to introduce changes in the JEE Advanced exam. The changes were proposed in wake of the inadequate numbers of students qualifying the entrance exam this year. The IITs argued that JEE (Advanced) exam is now a brand and any changes in the pattern to dilute the difficulty level of the exam are not desirable at the moment. They also shot down another proposal which suggested that in the first year, students should only be allocated the college and not the engineering branch. According to the agenda of the meeting, the government had proposed a five-member panel to “develop a robust and scientifically designed entrance exam system to test the potential of the candidates as well as to reduce their dependence on coaching institutes”. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said, after the meeting, “to address concerns regarding students’ dependence on coaching institutes for cracking JEE (Advanced), IITs will strengthen the Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) program. Under PAL, IIT students and teachers record lectures to help school students crack the entrance test.” In another significant decision taken in the meeting, each IIT is now free to decide the tuition fee for the foreign students who are enrolled in the IITs M.Tech and research programs and the responsibility for the same has been given to the Board of Governors of each institute.

‘Future clasrooms’ in Vishakhapatnam are inspiration to all the schools

‘Future clasrooms’ in Vishakhapatnam are inspiration to all the schools

Vishakhapatnam has taken the lead in bringing the ‘Future Classrooms’ to the students. These classroom are developed in collaboration with the Google and actively uses ICT (Information Communication Technology) to impart education to the students. Presently 31 public schools in state are using this technology to enhance and change the way students learn in the schools. "Future classroom is a solution which has introduced G Suite for education. This is a set of applications including Gmail, docs, drive, calendar, hangouts, classroom and more that helps in collaborative and interactive learning," says Bani Dhawan, head of education, Google India. As a pilot project, ‘Future classrooms’ is live in four states -- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. "The project based on student centered learning had positive outcomes in short span of time," said Bani. School labs are connected to the future classrooms and student are able to access the G Suite through their chromebooks, which helps them in learning English, Hindi, Science, Maths, History in internet enabled environment. Future classrooms allow students to work on school projects and group assignments in real time. The educational content has been crated by the teachers and is mapped on to the system for the students. "We have trained around 500 teachers to use this technology for effective teaching. In Vishakhapatnam, the Google program managers are stationed in the schools to assist the teachers," said Bani. He further said that there is a popular perception that government school teachers are not receptive to advance teaching methods and these schools lag behind when it comes adopting new technologies for teaching the students. "But the teachers we trained picked up the technology effortlessly and are now spending more time teaching and less time in checking notebooks. For teachers it is more productive as it saves the burden of writing the assignments and notes on the blackboard in each class. Instead they have access to it through the system," said Bani.

To improve the results, Punjab government cuts the English syllabus by 40 percent

To improve the results, Punjab government cuts the English syllabus by 40 percent

In an attempt to improve the results of the state board exam, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) decided to do away with the 40% syllabus of English from classes 6th to 10th. The decision to reduce the syllabus comes in the middle of the current academic session and the examinations in March will be held according to the new syllabus, education officials said. English, along with the Social studies are the subjects which students of the state are failing the most. In Punjab, English is often referred to as ‘Waterloo’ even for the students who are good at other subjects. Teachers in Punjab, also have been demanding a reduction in the syllabus saying that it is too elaborate to cover in 200 days, which is the number of days for which classes are held in an academic year. According to the new English syllabus for class 10th , the numbers of chapters have been reduced from 24 to 14 and the number of letters to be written by the students have also been reduced from 47 to 31. Vijay Kumar, an English teacher at the government high school at Lallian Kalan in Jalandhar, said “the English syllabus of PSEB was much more vast than in other boards like CBSE, which left no time for revision. We have been demanding for long to review since it was affecting the overall results of class 10th in board exams”. “During various teachers’ training programs, we had raised the matter before Krishan Kumar, Punjab’s Education Secretary, who went through the syllabus and agreed it was creating an unnecessary burden on students and leading to their poor grasp of the subject,” said Chander Shekhar, an English teacher. This year, 89000 students of the PSEB flunked the English board exam.

For compromising the safety of the students, Delhi schools can lose their recognition

For compromising the safety of the students, Delhi schools can lose their recognition

The Delhi government has warned all the schools in the state of withdrawal of recognition in case they fail to comply with the students safety guidelines. The government also said that it will initiate disciplinary action against the principals of the defaulter schools. The government pulled the schools for their half-hearted compliance with the safety guidelines for the students and said that there is no respite in the number of assaults on the student within and outside the school premises. "Despite serious endeavors by the government, other agencies and by courts, the schools also respond with only half-hearted compliance," an official order by the Directorate of Education (DoE) said. "In the case of some schools, the status of compliance is even more worrisome. No wonder then, that there is no respite in the number of various types of physical, emotional and sexual assaults on school children within the school boundaries and outside," it said. "In fact, such incidents are on the rise. In such a grim scenario, it is felt that the half-hearted approach won't work anymore. If our schools are serious about providing foolproof safety and security to the innocent children whose parents trust us and only, therefore, they entrust us with the responsibility of their wards), then they must ensure compliance of the directions," the official order said. The department has said that it "shall initiate disciplinary proceedings against the heads of schools and estate managers if they fail to follow the tenets of student safety guidelines in word and spirit". The directive is issued after a recent case in which a minor girl was raped by an electrician in the NDMC school premises in the city.

DSSSB exam: Students were given Political Science paper instead of Sanskrit paper

During the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) exam some of the students, at one examination centers, received political science question paper while they had appeared for the Sanskrit exam. When these students appeared for the re-test, the Sanskrit question paper remained the same as the previous one leading to the allegations that these students already knew the question paper. The exam was held to recruit post-graduate teachers (PGT) in Delhi government schools. Some candidates said that they had filed a complaint regarding the same but no action has been taken by the authorities yet. The incident took place at a government school in northeast Delhiʼs Jaffrabad. Sunil Shastri, a guest teacher who took the exam, said, “The exam was supposed to begin at 10.30 am. But at the Jaffrabad center, question papers were distributed at different timings in different classrooms. In some cases, Sanskrit candidates were given the political science paper. When we complained, officials from the DSSSB and police came to the school and said a re-test would be held. But by then, those who got the Sanskrit paper had discussed the questions.” Another teacher, who did not wish to be named said “The re-exam began at 1.40 pm, but the paper was the same as the one in the morning. When some of us protested and said we won’t take the exam, officials confined us in the classroom.” Last year, a CBI probe was called to check the alleged DSSSB exam leak to recruit the teachers for primary classes and 18 people were arrested related to the matter.

Getting degree is a part of the education, not education in itself: President Kovind

Getting degree is a part of the education, not education in itself: President Kovind

Addressing the nation on the eve of 72nd Independence day, President Kovind said that getting a degree does not ensure that a person is educated but education is reflected by the quality of the person. “Achieving degree is not education, but it lies on enhancing the quality of a person,” said Kovind. The President also took the opportunity to highlight other important issues related to women and social conditions. “Women have a special significance in our society. They should have the freedom to choose their path, whether they want to use their skills in the development of house, in the workforce, or in educational institutions,” he said. He commenced his speech by talking about the importance of the 15th August. “August 15 is sacred for every Indian. Our tricolour is a representation of our nation. Independence of India was a result of the sacrifice of freedom fighters and ancestors,” Kovind said. Last year, during his Independence day speech Mr. Kovind talked about the importance of the education and technology in the lives of the individuals. He talked about India, which is progressing but as a compassionate society. “The New India should be a society which should be both developed and sensitive,” he had said.
