Delhi schools preparing the students as the air quality changes from poor to worse

Shifting morning prayers inside the classrooms and mandating the students to wear the mask during outdoor activities are some of the measures adopted by the schools in Delhi as the air pollution gets worse. The quality of air pollution is speculated to get even worse post-Diwali celebrations. “We have quality filters in place because of which all our classrooms receive treated fresh air throughout the working hours and a professional team is monitoring this. We are also closely monitoring and recording PM2.5 (particulate matter) levels, with checks being conducted every few hours. This information helps guide our outdoor activities,” she Deepa Kumar, principal, Heritage Xperiential Learning School, Gurgaon. For three weeks now, the quality of the air in the national capital is oscillating between poor and worse, but the experts believe that the situation will get worse after the Diwali. Kumar said that due to worse conditions school administration has to cancel the outdoor activities. “If needed, we conduct appropriate activities inside the classes during the sports hour during the day,” she added. Ashok Pandey, principal, Ahlcon International School in Mayur Vihar, said, “We have shifted the venue of morning assembly indoors and advised parents to send their wards wearing masks so whenever they are outdoors they have limited exposure to toxic air”. Amid the rise in air pollution, the schools are encouraging children to celebrate green Diwali and Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan has launched manual asthma detailing how school administrations should act in case of emergency scenario.
