50 percent Asst. Professors in the Rajasthan University are without a Ph.D. degree

In an attempt to deal with the falling standards of education in the nation, UGC has decided that having a Ph.D. would be a necessary requirement for the post of assistant professor. However, the rule will be implemented from 2021. Enforcing the rule three years from now might not be a good idea because at present, more than 50 percent of the Assistant Professors in the Rajasthan University do not have their Ph.D. degree. 125 Assistant Professors out of total 242 are teaching in the University without a Ph.D. degree. Earlier in 2013, the university conducted a recruitment drive for hiring 239 Assistant Professors. At the time of hiring only 60 candidates had their Ph.D. degrees and 25 were enrolled in the Ph.D. Of the enrolled candidates, only a few have been able to complete their Ph.D. degree successfully. According to the Professors of the university, there are around 80 professors who are still completing their course.
