Only letter of intent was issued to the Jio Institute: Government



Clearing all the discussions and controversies surrounding the ‘Jio institute’ and Institution of Eminence tag from the government, Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said in Rajya Sabha that university was only issued ‘letter of intent’. “We have only given them a letter of intent…we will not give them any money,” he said in his reply during Question Hour. Javadekar further said that the committee of experts has made the decision of selecting the institutes after a thorough scrutiny. The institutes which were chosen as Institutions of Eminence are: Indian Institute of ScienceIIT-DelhiIIT-BombayBirla Institute of Technological Sciences PilaniManipal Academy of Higher Education When CPI leader D Raja was asked that why the institutes such as IIT-Chennai and  JNU are not on the list, Javadekar replied that the list was prepared by the panel and the government did not interfere with them in any way. During the question hour, the question on recruiting the specialists from the private sector through lateral entry in bureaucracy was also raised. MoS, Personnel, Jitendra Singh said in a written reply, “The decision for lateral entry at joint secretary-level is based on the recommendations of the sectoral group of secretaries on governance, in view of the need for bringing in fresh ideas, new approaches to governance and to augment the availability of personnel at JS level and not because of any conclusion that Indian bureaucracy is inefficient.”
