CBI report in Meghalaya Job Scam to examined by Additional Chief Secretary

CBI report in Meghalaya Job Scam to examined by Additional Chief Secretary

After the chief secretary P S Thangkhiew was named as an accused in the CBI report on the 2009 Meghalaya education job scam, the Meghalaya HC has directed that state Additional Chief Secretary will head the panel formed to examine the CBI report. The court has already given an extension of 6 months to the committee for taking a final decision on the CBI report. The court had passed the order on Friday. The order was passed by the division bench of Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice H S Thangkhiew. "It is directed that the committee to examine the CBI report shall be under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary in-charge Political Department instead of Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya as nominated earlier," the bench said in its judgment. The bench further said “the extension of six months' time sought for compliance with directions of the court is granted with the specific stipulation that it is the last opportunity and the order be strictly complied with before the expiry of the extended period”. In 2017, the HC had handed over the investigation to the CBI and directed it to submit the report within six months in order to bring in the persons responsible for the scam. In its report, CBI pointed out that majority of the candidates were appointed in an irregular way and their marks, experience and educational qualifications were modified by applying the white fluid (corrective ink). In its report CBI pointed five cabinet ministers, the then speaker and six legislators in the Congress-led coalition government and other politicians for tampering with the score-sheets of the candidates.
