Lok Sabha passes teachers reservation bill

Lok Sabha passes teachers reservation bill

On Monday, Lok Sabha passed a bill which proposed to count the entire college or university as a unit instead of counting individual department as a unit for the purpose of providing reservation for filling teachers’ posts in the central universities. Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said “the bill will give a major push to the reforms in the education sector, making it inclusive for the candidates from all categories”. HRD Minister described the bill as the beginning of a new era and said “this proposed legislation shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's commitment for the welfare of the last man in the row.” He also informed the house that there is a reservation of 10 percent for the EWS category and that the government has already allocated INR 770 crore for the reservation of the EWS category. The opposition opposed the bill and said that the bill should be referred to the standing committee for a comprehensive review. Congress leader Adhir Rajan Chowdhury said “ the party is not opposed to the contents of the Bill but questioned the urgency of issuing an ordinance days before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.” "I would oppose invocation of ordinance...this kind of arbitrary invocation of the ordinance does not augur well for a vibrant democracy," Mr Chowdhury said.
