J&K asked SC to extend the deadline for the center’s scholarship scheme
The administration of J&K has moved to the top court seeking an extension for the August 15 deadline for the students who were selected from the state under Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) for admission in various colleges across the nation. On behalf of the J&K administration, the plea was filed by advocate Shoeb Alam before the bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana. According to the plea, the GoI revoked the special status of JandK on August 5 and since then restrictions have been imposed on assemble and movement of people and all communications have been suspended. Under these circumstances, it will be difficult for the students to meet the deadline and complete the admission process. The plea further said that 3,672 students have completed their admission process and requested an extension for the 2,401 students who are still to complete the admission formalities. "It is most respectfully submitted that if the last date for joining is not extended, meritorious selected students would be deprived of quality higher education and defeating the object and benefits of the scholarship scheme, thereby resulting in grave injustice," said the plea. Under the PMSSS scheme scholarships are provided to the meritorious students from JandK to meet the expenditure on tuition fees, hostel fees, cost of books and other incidental charges as they study engineering and regular courses across the country.
