29 institutions penalized in Gujarat on the issue of extra fees

Following the orders of the Fee Regulatory Committee (Technical), 29 institutions in Gujarat have been penalized. The amount of penalty varies from Rs 1.55 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. These institutes have been penalized for charging extra fees from the students. As of now, nine institutes have returned a total sum of INR 1.19 crore to 2,074 students which they have deposited as caution money. Among these nine institutes, two are run by the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shankarsinh Vaghela. According to the reports, 876 students are enrolled in Shankarsinh Vaghela Bapu Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar and 241 students are enrolled in Shankarsinh Vaghela Bapu Institute Technical Campus, Gandhinagar. The former institute has returned INR 43.80 lakh and the latter returned INR 12.05 lakh to the students. Earlier this year, institutes have returned a total of INR 1.05 crore to the students on the committee’s order. “The FRC (Technical) has successfully acted on two parts – returning money to students and imposing a fine on institutes violating its orders. Thus, when brought to the notice of the committee, these were penalized after issuing them repeated orders, directions and notices and personal hearing,” said FRC (Technical) member Kamlesh Joshipura.
