Weak students to exit from IITs with B.Sc. In engineering in three years

Soon academically weak students may be able to exit the IITs in three years with a B.Sc. Degree in engineering. The proposal is on the agenda of the IIT Council meeting. The council is headed by the Human Resource Development Minister and is the highest decision-making body.Currently, students get enrolled in undergraduate programs for fours years and after the completion of the degree are awarded B.Tech degree. However, students with weak grades may be allowed to drop midway.According to the data shared by the HRD Ministry in Parliament, 2,461 students dropped out of different IITs in last two years across B.Tech and post-graduate programs and this also includes the cases of expulsion of the students on account of poor academic performance. It is for this reason, the HRD Ministry is proposing an exit option after six semesters. According to the Council agenda, IITs have been asked to approve the proposal which will allow the academically weak students to opt for the B.Sc.(Engineering) after the second semester and leave after three years, provided they maintain a minimum academic track record as per the standards.
