Delhi HC seeks a response from the DU for denying maternity leave to the ad-hoc female professor

On Friday, the Delhi High Court has sought the response from DU on a plea in which it as alleged that the university is denying maternity leave to the ad-hoc female professors. The petition was filed by the female professor of the Aurbindo College which said that under the Maternity Benefit Act she was entitled to six months of leave but the university did not grant her the benefit as she is not a permanent employee and is employed on an ad-hoc basis. She also claimed that SC had held that maternity benefits are available to all employees irrespective of their status as regular or temporary. In the plea, the women also claimed that she had made several representations before the university since January 4 regarding the same matter as her expected date of delivery was February 22. However, the university did not respond and she gave birth on February 3, 2019. Her lawyer told the court that since the delivery the lady professor is on leave without pay as the university did not grant her maternity leave. DU’s lawyer told the court that her contract is renewed every four months and at present it stands to expire on March 18 and he further added that it was a policy decision of the university to provide benefit to only permanent employees.

DU Teachers against the university’s syllabus revision plan

DU Teachers against the university’s syllabus revision plan

On Wednesday, the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) has slammed the syllabus revision plans of the university and called the step as a “thoughtlessly derived from a controversial and widely criticized Outcomes-based model prevalent in State-funded US universities”. However, the university’s officials said that the process was undertaken in the light of UGC’s Learning Outcome-based Framework (UGC-LOCF). "The system is pushed by standard outcomes-based incentives (rewards and punishment). Recent attempts by the MHRD to restrict research, apply quantified performance parameters through a Tripartite MoU, push towards loan-funding and financial "self-reliance" also stem from this approach," DUTA said in a statement. The Association further said that LOCF will invite greater interference from the governments and politicians which will allow them to dictate the outcomes for the university. However, a statement from the varsity said "The revised curriculum will be expressed in terms of outcomes related to knowledge, understanding, skill, attitudes and values. It aims to foster quality higher education in academic research, contributing to society". The revised courses are scheduled to be implemented from the upcoming new academic session. According to the university, the revised courses “will benefit close to seven lakh undergraduate students who will be seeking admission in 2019 from Open Learning and regular streams”. The revision process began on March 11, 2019 by inviting all Deals and Heads for a detailed consultative meeting. "Consensus emerged on the need to revise the curriculum without any further delay. Participation of students in the curriculum revision process has also been ensured," it said.

Students continue to protest against expensive MBA course at the JNU University

Students continue to protest against expensive MBA course at the JNU University

Students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) continued their indefinite hunger strike as opposed to the introduction of an expensive MBS course in the university. "We have been sitting on hunger strike; this is the eighth day of our strike against many issues but primarily against the management course which will be inducted from this academic session," Sarika Chaudhary, Vice president Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) said. "The course has the highest ever fee structure that is Rs. 12 lakh which is higher than any private college. How many can we afford this fee for the course?" she said. JNU Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said, "A discussion cannot happen when 500 people are standing and shouting at you. It happens in a peaceful atmosphere. Right from the beginning, they are against opening the management school on the campus. If the fee is so high then why are students applying for course from all over the country? We have just 50 seats but a large number of people who have qualified CAT exam have applied for our program." "We cannot remain frogs in the well in today's time. The university has to expand its programs in order to become the best university in the world and contribute to the country. We are following all the rules and regulations of UGC. All these decisions are taken after a long discussion with our executive and academic councils. I don't see any point why anyone should oppose these kinds of expansion of such program which is good for University," Mr. Kumar added. A student sitting on the hunger strike said that we have been sitting on an indefinite hunger strike but neither the VC nor any person from the JNU’s administration has come to meet us. Instead the VC accused us of entering into his house and threatening his wife. We did nothing of this sort and protesting is within our constitutional rights. As reported, about 200 students marched towards the VC’s residence but were stopped by the security guards at the gate. However, the protesters smashed the gate and entered forcefully. JNU’s VC said that he will not file the complaint against the students who barged into his house but a strict disciplinary action will be taken according to the rules of the university.

DU admissions to commence a month earlier this academic year

DU admissions to commence a month earlier this academic year

Delhi University (DU) will commence the admission process for the undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. seats from April 15, 2019 for the new academic year which is a month earlier when compared with the dates from the last year. According to the official communication by the DU university, the university will finalize the admissions by May 7, 2019 for all the seats under undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. streams. Sports fitness trails and ECA (Extra Co-curricular Activities) will commence from May 20, 2019. Every year, DU reserves five percent seats in all the colleges under sports and extra-curricular quota and admissions under these two will commence before the main cut-off list is released by the DU. From this year, the university has also reduced the penalty due to change in the stream. Earlier, the university used to deduct 5% for the change in the stream but from this year only 2% will be deducted from the best of four average. The university is also trying to use the CBSE database for the marks of the students so that students do not have to submit them to the university during the admissions process. Last year, more than 3 lakh students applied for the 60,000 seats in the DU.

Experts from CUK resigned due to Row over research areas in Ph.D.

Experts from CUK resigned due to Row over research areas in Ph.D.

The registrar of the University of Kerala issued a circular which stated that research topics for Ph.D. should be aligned with the national priorities and the research in the irrelevant areas must be discouraged. After the issue of the circular, academic expert and professor Meena T Pillai has resigned from the Board of Studies in English and Comparative Literature of the university. “I think this is a fundamental violation of the spirit of research and academic freedom. The decision from the part of the University to implement the order that limits prospective research to select areas which are in accordance with ‘national prioritiesʼ is highly detrimental to the purpose of higher education in public universities, especially at a time when the spirit of education is increasingly being subsumed to the interests of neo-liberalization, privatization and corporatization,” she said in the resignation letter. She further said that research is an act of rigorous scholarly investment and forcing the scholars to chose only from few topics will be the death of free and committed research in public universities. “The use of the term ‘national prioritiesʼ itself is problematic within academics as it curbs the autonomy of the researcher and compromises the ethics that should form the base of any academic endeavour,” said the strongly worded letter, adding, “Academics should inculcate spaces that are democratic and inclusive, as opposed to instructing researchers to stoop before the eccentricities of regressive regimes.” The expert resigned after the circular because if implemented it will only serve narrow political interests and would kill the freedom of research in the university.

CBSE to encourage collaboration among schools for the better learning experience

After instructing schools to arrange discussions among themselves and learn from the best teaching practices of each other, CBSE has now decided to form groups of 4-6 schools which can collaborate on aspects of teaching, training and academic reforms. The groups so formed will be known as ‘Hubs of learning’ and will promote the culture of sharing among schools. The new initiative by the CBSE will encourage the sharing of ideas, instructions and assessment strategies and will help individual teachers in improving the classroom learning experience of the children. Following are some of the areas on which schools are expected to collaborate: Academic collaborationResource sharingProfessional development of teachers/staffsSystematic reforms among other areas. From this academic year onwards, CSBE has decided to combine the certificate and marksheet of the secondary exams. Students of secondary class from this year onwards will receive only single document for class 10 exams. The decision was taken by the board’s examination committee and was approved by the governing body. "A single certificate at secondary level examination combining the language of the marksheet and certificate shall be issued for class 10 examination with effect from 2019," a senior board official said. "The document shall be treated as a certificate and candidates shall have to fulfill requirements as notified by the board for obtaining a duplicate one," the official added. The new changes, however, do not apply to students in class 12 and they will continue to receive separate documents for marksheet and certificate of examination. “If a student has appeared for an improvement examination, he or she shall not be issued a separate pass certificate for that subject but only a separate statement of marks obtained,” the official said. The board has also decided that from 2020 compartment candidates will be given three chances to appear for the examination and the candidates who failed the exam will be allowed to appear for the exam next year and practical marks will be carried forward. "The affiliation bye-laws have been amended to incorporate the changes," the board official said.
