Delhi HC seeks a response from the DU for denying maternity leave to the ad-hoc female professor

On Friday, the Delhi High Court has sought the response from DU on a plea in which it as alleged that the university is denying maternity leave to the ad-hoc female professors. The petition was filed by the female professor of the Aurbindo College which said that under the Maternity Benefit Act she was entitled to six months of leave but the university did not grant her the benefit as she is not a permanent employee and is employed on an ad-hoc basis. She also claimed that SC had held that maternity benefits are available to all employees irrespective of their status as regular or temporary. In the plea, the women also claimed that she had made several representations before the university since January 4 regarding the same matter as her expected date of delivery was February 22. However, the university did not respond and she gave birth on February 3, 2019. Her lawyer told the court that since the delivery the lady professor is on leave without pay as the university did not grant her maternity leave. DU’s lawyer told the court that her contract is renewed every four months and at present it stands to expire on March 18 and he further added that it was a policy decision of the university to provide benefit to only permanent employees.
